A Star Is Reborn
The force will soon be with us again. Star Wars fans the world over are now counting the days until the new movie, The Phantom Menace, blasts into life - slated to be June 3 in Australia. Long, long ago when Star Wars premiered in 1977, plans were already afoot to develop it into a six-film saga. The Phantom Menace, know in fan circles as Episode 1, is a prequal - that is, it goes back to the very beginings of the Star Wars empire, set in a galaxy far, far away.
Some of the name will be familiar, but the faces are new. Oscar-nominated actor Liam Neelson is a lightsabre-weilding Jedi warrior, Qui-Gon Jinn, while Ewan Trainspotting McGregor plays the apprentice Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi, who grows into the wise old warrior played by Alec Guinness in the earlier films.
You'll also meet a little boy named Anakin Skywalker, played by eight-year-old Jake Lloyd. He seems sweet, but keep an eye on him - he grows up to be the nasty Darth Vader. As a youngster he romances Queen Amildala, played by Natalie Portman - and together they'll eventually create the twins Luke and Leia Sykwalker.
Of the legion of famous animated oddities from the original film series, pointy-eared Yoda reappears, and you'll witness the birth of R2-D2 and C-3PO.
